The City of Culver City asked JKA to produce recommendations for an update to the R1 Zoning Standards and introduce Design Guidelines that responded to community feedback concerning the “mansionization” of residences in single-family neighborhoods in Culver City. JKA undertook photo-documentation and conducted in-person community workshops with seven Culver City neighborhoods in addition to an online survey that revealed the community’s concern with new construction and additions that maximized the allowable buildable area and did not match the architectural style or character or surrounding neighborhoods and homes.
Based upon the research, engagement with the community, and communications with City Staff, the Planning Commission, and City Council, JKA proposed recommendations for updates to the Zoning Standards and subsequently wrote Zoning Code Amendments with relevant diagrams that promoted maintenance of existing character and the scale of Culver City’s single-family residential neighborhoods. The Zoning Code Amendments were adopted by City Council in May 2020.
