Located in the San Fernando Valley, this 12,000 sf mixed-use project for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Metrolink system also serves as Chatsworth’s “town center”. The station depot houses offices for local government agencies and community organizations as well as a community hall. The project also includes a 90-child care facility. It is one of the first projects in the United States to directly incorporate childcare in a commuter rail station. The building incorporated the community’s requirement that the design respect the character of a former Southern Pacific depot which stood on the site. The design utilizes the proportions and materials of the original station. In contrast to the historicism of the west face. The east side of the building has a contemporary profile reflective of the modern program requirements related to childcare. The design was a collaborative effort of John Kaliski and Aleks Istanbullu. Construction documents and observation were completed by AIJK Architecture and City Design.
